PSU Freshmen Advice
CLUBS TO JOIN
Different clubs I recommend:
THON (these are committees that work directly for THON Weekend at the BJC)
- THON Morale (very outgoing, willing to do anything personality, takes up a lot of your time, very social committee, all of your THON time is on the floor with all of the dancers and the excitement),
- THON Communications (I did this committee my freshman year, less time commitment but you don’t get to know the people in your committee as well, learn a lot about specific details about THON weekend and work at info booths during THON)
- THON Hospitality (I’m doing this committee this year – you work with and organize the food that the dancers eat all weekend, you get to be on the floor behind the food tables from the dancers)
Atlas THON
If you’re interested in raising money with an independent organization but not a fraternity or sorority
Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society
If you're grades are decent enough your first semester, you will get a letter of induction into Phi Eta Sigma. It is a service oriented active organization at University Park's campus.
Blue & White Society
You don’t really have to get involved in this if you don’t want to – just a good resume booster.
IM Sports
In my opinion, this the best way to get to really get to know people (I am living with 2 of the people that played on my team from a soccer team that I organized Freshman year.
Major Related Organizations
**Most importantly look into clubs that relate to your majors as soon as you can. These clubs look best on your resume and if you get involved your freshman year you will definitely get a leadership positions down the line if you want.
I got involved with Student Society of Architectural Engineers (SSAE) my freshman year. I am currently Treasurer & Webmaster and hope to be President next year.
Student Council @ University Park
- UPUA - University Park Undergraduate Association
- SPA - Student Programming Association
- UPAC - University Park Allocation Committee
Can only apply your sophomore or junior year. Ambassadors is most basically a very close knit group of people who put on different pride events throughout campus. We work for Penn State Alumni Association to involve current students in the University and excite prospective students to come. There is no other organization that is as well organized and lead as Lion Ambassadors. The friends that you make will end up being some of your closest relationships that will last a lifetime. In my opinion, the people involved are amongst the most driven and personable people you will ever meet. With this motivation to succeed behind every one of its members, the Ambassadors organization mark of excellence is known throughout campus.
